The Comparative Strengths of Britain and France in 1756
Britain and France are very much burgeoning imperial powers jostling as you say for supremacy. They'd been at war from 1689 to 1697 from 1702 to 1713 from 1744 although fighting starting in 43 to 1748. In many senses the outbreak of hostilities in 56 is less important than this long term tension between Prussia, Austria and Russia.
