Cleveland's Allergy to Demagoguery
Cleveland has a lifelong allergy to demagoguery. He actually, I don't really write about this in the book but he has this longstanding allergy to demagogue in the church being used for political purposes. This idea of the importance of sentiment is embedded all the way back to the Declaration of Independence. It is inseparable from how American politics is supposed to operate. The policy stuff is important in so far as it flows downhill from some first principle,. But he's never coming untethered from those first principles hurts him sometimes politically, but it's really central to understanding him.
