He was a friend of cecil rhodes. He believed in thea british empire getting wider and wider. Towards the end of his life, he recognized that there were very significant threats to the british Empire. But what he was was a realistic imperialist. And e he recognized that that imperial stories sold newspapers. In fact, he attacked the unionist government for not being more pro active in fighting that war.
