Gerda fought to build a respected woman's history graduate programme. In 19 72, they created the first masters degree programm in women's history at sarah lawrence college. That same year, gerda published her most influential piece of work, black women in white america. It was a collection of primary sources that documented black women's contribution history despite slavery and oppression over the course of 350 years.
