The Strategic Importance of Crete in the Battle of Britain

The occupation of Crete by Germany would mean that the Lefwaffe could also then bump the Suez Canal and attack Alexandria occupied by the British. Both the British and Germans were aware that the only way to seize Crete was with an airborne assault. General Dafriga, a significant strategic planner and figure within the Hitler's war who will return to no doubt saw Crete as being the great testbed for airborne assaults. The Figa Corps then based on Crete would be able to be used again to a drop on Alexandria or Cairo when Rommel approached the Egyptian border. This would essentially paralyze the British.
