In the heyday of athenian democracy, it was still only democracy for men. Women were not politically active citizens and they never had a vote or a voice. Democracy based on a massive, massive number of slaves. The ancient athenians thought that if you're doing democracy, the only version of democracy that's worth it is direct democracy.
