On October 15th 1964 Nikita Khrushchev was overthrown in a coup and replaced by Leonide Brezhnev. The very next day China tested its first atomic bomb and it was a success. You can't imagine the surge of optimism that permeated Zhongnanhai at this time. In the ebullient afterglow of Khrushchev's overthrow Mao sent Joe and Lai to Moscow to see what their thoughts were with regard to sinosoviate relations. Well that little get together didn't go too well for Joe. He went to Moscow with Hulong to attend this event. The 47th anniversary of the October Revolution.
