The Demographic Differences Between East and West Germany
Culture was heavily subsidized by the state. Artists basically could live by being artists because the state would fund them and train them. Their whole libraries were put into factories and into schools and they were well stocked. As Philip Alterman for example has pointed out in his book about the Stasi poetry cycle this is one of the most well read societies in the world.
