The Nature of Poverty Has Changed
4 million British children have been dumped into poverty. Parents are having to decide themselves, whether to eat a meal or leave more for their children. I'm now seeing poverty in the constituency I represented and grew up in 50 years ago that is greater than ever I've seen. The poverty is showing up in people's homes and households where there are two workers in the household. This is what's changed. We say we're a rich country, but the poorest fifth of the population are now much poorer here than most of the poorest countries in Central and Eastern Europe. They actually would be better off even as a poor household.
