The History of the Royal Air Force
In the First World War, there were tens of thousands of women in the military services. That left a mark in the minds of British people who knew they had this woman power contingent to rely on when WWII broke out. But at the start of the Second World War, their options for roles with the Air Force are fewer. There is definitely a certain amount of underestimation and a discomfort with seeing women in military uniforms because it's not what's supposed to happen according to the kind of rules of the day.
