In C you could take a list of a data structure in a.h file and put it on one .c file, but then separate the functions that manipulated it into different DLLs. That would allow you to separate them into different Dlls nowadays, which probably couldn't do back then. It's very simple to come up with name for small objects if they're focused; like employee report generator or payroll calculator.
