A black boy, Dick roland, was accused of assaulting a white girl in an elevator. A newspaper article about the incident fomented hostility against him and his community. Black men marched down to the court house where they were confronted by a large white mob. The group tried to protect dick roland from what they thought would be a certain lynching. After that, the greenwan community was invaded by the white mob - numbering at its peak in the thousands. At least 103 people died during the massacre; hundreds more were injured.
