War of the Worlds - A Brilliant Trick of What Science Fiction Can Do
The idea of imperial decline and fall is also central to War of the Worlds, which I think is 1898. H.G. Wells predicted an atom bomb in 1914 and he thought he would emerge around 1945. So that's kind of a fairly amazing kind of sense of what they were understanding about projection into the future.
