In the 19 eighties, there was active discussion about how to change china's state directed communist system. The western idea was that once you freed up those market forces, they were essentially stoppable. But chinas leaders recognized that as a possibility, but saw it as a danger. They've used differing combinations of policies in order to achieve and sustain economic growth while at the same time preserving the power of the party. I think there's a question now whether they're going to be able to continue, or whether they're moving in a direction that's going to so constrict the space for the bird that it may actually kill it.
