In the early days of the free soft weatr movement, people were experimenting with these new things called computers. And they were working in kind of very calabrative ways. There was no sense that you owned what you wrote as code. That all changed quite quickly throughout the late seventies and eighties. But there is still this kind of culture among atea geeks where they like fiddling with their computer. They don't like to be told what to do by a company who makes proprietary soft ware. It's an effective way of writing computer programms because it helps to see more problems. The tech industry wasn't always one that was dominated by a billion-dollar companies.
