What Is Hardwick?
There used to be a theory that country houses should supported by the estates they owned. But this wasn't really the case in the er sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, or certainly in the early seventeenth century. People ruined themselves on these houses because it was all about getting favour with the king. And of course, ultimately, if they could get the king to stay with them, how, how wonderful was that? That was worth a lot in every conceivable way.
