The landscape out in Montenegro is really rough and mountainous, and if that really was her daughter, then Matrice is out there by herself where anything could happen to her. She could have fallen down a canyon, she could have been abducted in her vulnerable state, basically pick a worst-case scenario here, and it could have happened.
