The Resurrection of Self-Confidence in the 1960s
Britain seemed to have a renewed sense of self-confidence in that period, didn't it? Why do you think that was? I think, to a large extent, it is a reaction against the time of Margaret Thatcher. She had won three elections in a row. And then when she was removed, it turned out that the Conservative government was still in power anyway. It won a fourth general election. A whole load of people whose entire adult lives have been spent under this Conservative government pretty much gave up on politics and decided they would pursue cultural change.
