Shakespeare is a realist. He's writing about people trying to make a living. So in a way, the portrayal of the women is one of the most complicated things. It has to be understood that the women were played by boys or men. The plays are like genre paintings. They provide a kind of real world ballast against which the aspirations of the aristocracy and the monarchy look sort of,. yeah, fine, but it provides a kind of skepticism.
