The Strike Wave in the Congo
The strike began as a protest against the government's austerity programme. Soon it appeared to be in all out challenge to the government by the socialist controlled unions. The catholic unions refused to support the strikers, whose main plan now was to bring down the government if they could. Police and troops anticipated serious trouble, so much so that some belgian forces serving with nato were ordered home to belgium.
