The Endowment at a University of North Carolina
The board at North Carolina University was made up of nine guys from the same fraternity, all roughly the same age. They would get together three or four times a year for a football game or basketball game and they wuld try to time the market. The guy right across the street behind us, julian robertson, had stepped off the board and said, guys, you are terrible at this,. So we went from basicly me to a team of eight investment professionals. Over the course of seven years, built out the back office. We actually spun ourselves out of the university into a private management company.
