In April 1641, the emperor ordered another prominent donglin opponent to commit suicide. Five months later, in October, chief grand secretary returned to Beijing as a compromise between warring factions at court. The compromise would prove to be a failure because certain idealistic donglin partisans were unable to accept the pragmatic deals that kept the compromise alive.
