Kathleen stock is an academic philosopher for the past 18 years. Up until last october, her professional home was the university of sussex. But she quit her post following months of turmoil on campus. She faced a barrage of criticism and abuse from outraged students. Eventually she resigned, saying the stress was unbearable. Her experience says much about the vitriol and bad blood which has come to define the debate about sex, gender and identity. Is there any hope of finding common ground?
