In the 19th century, life insurance became very popular among the working classes. It was a way to protect yourself if your job or home were taken away prematurely. The industry grew quite unscrupulous and dodgy as it expanded into the working class. Katherine Flanagan's role in all of this was connecting agents with possible policy holders. She sat between the agent and the person whose life was insured. And she set herself up, or her sister up, or someone else up,. as the beneficiary of that person's death.
