Between 1969 and the day premier Joe passed away in 1976, it was the most airtight, full court press that you can imagine. Every utterance he made or document he signed, his enemies picked through sniffed, weighed,. always looking for something, anything that they could run to Mao with which might diminish him. But when Richard Nixon began reaching out as soon as he sat down in the Oval Office in early 1969, Mao was quite excited about this. establishing relations with the US was a very big priority for Mao.
