Lenny Kogan: I see this moment in the 1890s as a turn toward mass politics. The Catholic Church played an important role, articulating notions of community belonging and polishness in the region. It is all due because of all these colonial discourses and Germanizing agendas where, you know, polls tended to be double attack for the Polish identity and for the Catholic identity.
