Football Violence in the 1980s
The 1980s saw some of the deadliest episodes of football violence. The Hazel Stadium disaster in Belgium killed 39 people and left 400 injured. In 1989, 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at Hills Procedium during an FA Cup semi-final fixture between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Fascist groups such as the National Front began infiltrating and appealing to hooligan firms. There was a huge amount of racist abuse towards black players. Racism at football matches became rampant.
