I think our political consciousness has to have the chops to think back to the 1870s. I mean ghosts are very Victorian, but it's not ghostly because the Victorian thing never died. We have already been enduring and we are produced by this Victorian mindset. And so in some ways, it doesn't really appear to us as artificial or as contingent and frankly as vulnerable as it ought to.
