The Effects of Jet Engines on the Environment
When jet engines burn through fuel, the main byproduct that comes out of the exhaust pipe is water vapor. That's why you see those long white trails behind planes as they cross the sky. They're just water vapor, like any other cloud; contrails aren't dangerous to the environment or human health. But in addition to water vapor, there are other byproducts that are released from jet engines including nitrogen oxide and sulfur gases.
