A 2021 AEI survey said that 12% of Americans say they have no close friends. Loneliness is this perception that we have fewer friends or social connections than we think we should or than we want. Public health experts are concerned about how little we are spending time with each other. For older women, loneliness can increase the risk of heart disease by 27%.
