When a monarch died, a full inventory of their possessions was taken. So it wasn't just the bricks and mortar, but what was inside that was detailed as well. The roman catholic chapels tended to be very highly decorated. A lot of that was swept away with the reformation and with the rise of protestant faith. After er the glorious revolution 16 88, you had to be protestant to be king or queen of great britain. It was enshrined in law. But then really, with a few notable exceptions, we are a protestant country, or officially, with a protestant monarchy.
