There were stories of bodies being misidentified, weren't there? That did offer glimmers of hope for families and loved ones. People would really clutch at any straw to to believe that they were alive. Andte the unknown warrior was the sort of brain child of an army chaplain called david raylton who saw a plain wooden cross with the words written in a black lead pencil, unknown soldier of the black watch. It wasn't till four years later, 19 19, that he finally excepted that john was dead. He then spent the next 20, almost 20 years of his life trying to find john's a grave.
