Illich's approach in tools for conviviality felt short because he failed to understand how cybernetics was changing the nature of our tools. He thought that had already been happening when he wrote tools, but he just wasn't aware of it. And so he would have taken a different approach, even though I think his ideals remain the same, but I think he was seeing his problem and more.
