What You Learned in Unbearable Lightness?
There's editorial equivalence of that, where you cut out the very scene that seemed to be most important, just to learn what's left. The example I give in blink of an eye is from Julia, and after the preview, the audience seemed to be confused about where are we standing in this film. And so on the way back to the cutting room, I thought, we could cut out the scene on Long Island in the 1950s. That would remove one vertebra of this. It was a problem with this concatenation of all these memories within memories, within memories.
