John Bright is a Princeton graduate and longtime leader in the Transcendental Meditation movement who spent decades studying under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Trained as a TM teacher in 1970, John served as Maharishi's personal assistant, became the first administrative vice president of Maharishi International University, and opened the first TM centers in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt. Today he works with founders and CEOs on their own consciousness expansion journey, guiding them through higher states of awareness.
In this episode, we explore one of the most well researched consciousness expansion practices in history and the study that showed it actually reduced crime in eight American cities. John explains how TM produces a measurable fourth state of consciousness distinct from waking, sleeping, or dreaming, and how regular practice dissolves deeply rooted stress that sleep can never touch. He shares the research from UCLA and Harvard showing changes in oxygen consumption, brainwave coherence, and galvanic skin response during meditation. We also explore the Maharishi Effect, where just one percent of a city practicing TM led to an eight percent drop in crime while control cities saw crime rise. This is a conversation about what happens when human beings access the deepest layer of awareness through consciousness expansion and how that inner shift ripples outward.
