The Belfast Agreement
Northern Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom when Irish Free State became a self-governing country in 1921. But tensions between Unionists and Nationalists between Protestants and Catholics increasingly led to violence. The troubles, as they were called, lasted for some 30 years. During that period, more than three and a half thousand people were killed. Attempts to stop the fighting were unsuccessful until a deal was negotiated between the two communities on Good Friday 1998. Today is about the promise of a bright future, we hope a line can be drawn under the bloody past. We must all seize the opportunity.
