The Role of the Catholic Church in Polish Backwardness

I've always been fascinated by the fact that when people coming from multi-ethnic regions in Europe at the end of the 19th century, they start to settle. There's a moment which in my book I trace to the 1860s where there's this ethnic identity. But you see it clearly in the Polish case, how they start to separate themselves from Germans. And so I also saw Polish physicians working with the Catholic church to bring this modern nice and racialized discourses to the population. To offer better counsel and also getting the knowledge to uplift the population,. especially in rural areas where sometimes a physician wasn't readily available.
