I cannot help but think that plague played a role in the emergence of the reformation and in resistance to the established church which was blamed for the misdeeds that led God to visit plague upon humanity. You start to get evidence of what I would call proto-protestant movements quite soon after the black death and eventually you get Luther nailing his commandments to the war. There's a long backstory to that and I don't think it emerged from nowhere and so wild invention may have an independent life.
