The Importance of Estrogen in Bone Development

Anorexia causes the body to go into sort of a conservation mode, where some biological processes are shut down. One of those is the hormonal axis that stimulates the ovary to produce estrogen. In girls with severe anorexia, where their period stop, this becomes a low estrogen state. That can have long lasting impact on bone density for the rest of their lives and hugely increase the risk of osteoporosis.
