The Importance of Understanding the Context of Theatre

Theatre holds a special place because it combines so many artistic strains into a unique whole. The underlying thoughts, meanings and messages of a play can get lost if we don't understand the context in which it was written. I'm planning to spend the next 12 weeks with the ancient Greeks, Romans and then onto the medieval period. Some periods will have more to cover than others - but there's no reason why this podcast shouldn't be like that too.
