The Breakup of Yugoslavia

After World War II, Yugoslavia became a socialist federation made up of six republics in two autonomous regions. It speaks five official languages and prays to an Eastern Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim god. In the absence of Tito, the Yugoslav League of Communists put in place a collective, power-sharing model. A politician from each of the country's national units would take their turn as the head of state.
