The threat of mutual destruction loomed over everyone in the world. The effects of a hydronbon were almost inconceivable. One of the biggest strains on mental health was that terrifying feeling of being powerless against an unstoppable external threat. For instance, our grandparents and parents generation was told to build fallout shelters in the back yard of the house. It served a psychological purpose, because it made people feel they had some sort of agency.
