Ack maverick is a new book about the demise of mutual aid societies. The author argues that these groups couldn't withstand the great depression, and they all collapsed. He says African Americans didn't have such arrangements until after the civil war. A lot o thing's going on, cultural and otherwise, but te people are resourceful.
