The banana industry has traditionally believed that there's a dollar a pound threshold at which point the whole business model collapses. And clearly, if Panama disease hits this hemisphere, that threshold will be met. Americans eat more bananas than apples and oranges put together. In places like Africa and Asia where people rely on bananas for their daily nutrition, some get 90% of their calories from bananas.
