Mary eliza mahoney was the first african american to complete a professional training programm as a nurse in the united states. She started working at the new england hospital for women and chil when she was a tea nater. Her parents, charles and mary jane stuart mahony, were formerly enslaved in north carolina before moving to boston just before the civil war.
