Colours and the Sun
The romans had very strict rules about who could wear purple. Colours carry connotations not just over status, but because they mean things. One of the strongest connections with yellow is, of course, the sun. The egyptians used yellow substances in order to celebrate their sun deities. Gold was like the sun in many ways - it reflected light and never stopped shining. It's so hard to pin down an that to say it means just one thing at any time would be wrong.
