Joe and Lai's Relationship to Mao
Joe had to pay a penalty for cavorting at one time with Wang Ming. He also got a tongue lashing for the outcome of the New Fourth Army incident in January 1941. Mao really wanted to make sure that those comrades like Joe who came a little late to his side were totally signed up. It was a rough six weeks for Joe and Lai but he knew how to handle these things.
