He achieved his childhood dream of jroing the k g b. The ca gebe at that time was a dream for a lot of intelligent young russians. He did pretty well, but he wasn't a high flier by any manner of means. Was not an exceptionally bright linguist or an exceptionally bright student. His job in east germany? He was dealing with trying to recruit illegals. It's something our intelligence services don't do - it's simply not worth it. But the russians, it's a long tradition, and they do it. So he had absolutely no success whatever. As well as that, he was supposed to be recruiting agent.
