Introduction

Guitar synthesizers have been around since the 1960s. The first was a Vox V251 organ guitar that used insulated frets. In 1971 EMS released the Synthi Highfly, designed by David Cockrell. ARP announced the avatar in 1977 - an Odyssey Synth hooked into a hex pickup system. And then along came MIDI with sample-based synths and so the race was on to build a guitar synth which could convert pitch to musical notation.
