According to most sources, years of soul searching followed the Salem witch trials and executions. In 1706, Anne Putnam Jr. apologizes for the accusations she made as she had been one of the original three girls. By 1702, the courts in Massachusetts declared that the Salem witch Trials had been unlawful. Five years later, the Massachusetts General Court pronounced that January 14, 1697 would be a day of fasting to atone for the sins of the Salem witch trial.
